Wanying Liang

Contemporary Ceramic Artist & Sculptor

Wanying Liang is a contemporary ceramic artist whose work explores the intersection of traditional porcelain craftsmanship and conceptual narrative sculpture. She holds a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Ceramics from the prestigious New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University (2018) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from the China Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing (2011).

Her work has been exhibited internationally at major institutions including the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), the Taiwan Ceramics Biennale, and the Pearl Art Museum (Shanghai).

Artistic Philosophy: The Vessel as Body

Liang’s practice is deeply rooted in the concept of the vessel as a metaphor for the human experience and cultural memory. Drawing inspiration from ancient Chinese Hunping ("soul jars") and architectural forms like pagodas, her sculptures explore themes of memory, cultural duality, and the subconscious.

In her acclaimed series, including Woman as Vessel and her thesis I Do Not Know I Am a Guest When I Dream, Liang utilizes the fluidity of coil-built porcelain to mimic organic, corporeal silhouettes. Her work prominently features white as a primary color—a deliberate choice that navigates the cultural chasm between Western associations of white with purity and weddings, and Eastern associations with mourning and funerals.

"I channel my anxieties, fears, and struggles, transforming my works into 'containers' for emotions... My sculptures become spaces like my own body, undergoing processes of struggle, compromise, evolution, and survival."

She integrates abundant plant elements into her forms, captivated by the vigorous growth and inherent vitality of nature—intertwining vines, leaves, and flowers with rigid architectural structures to create tension between the organic and the disciplined.
